FMIPA UGM Strategic Partnership Awards 2026 Strengthens Partnerships for Greater Impact

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is expanding its partnerships with industry, government agencies and educational institutions. The partnerships are intended to strengthen the use of research and increase its contribution to society. This initiative was highlighted through the FMIPA UGM Strategic Partnership Awards 2026, which recognized 24 partners during the faculty’s 71st anniversary celebrations.

The awards recognized organizations that have supported FMIPA UGM through various forms of cooperation, particularly over the past five years. The recipients were recognized in three areas: the Alumni Inspiration Award, the Research and Community Service Contribution Award, and the Education Dedication Award.

FMIPA UGM Dean Prof. Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si., said collaboration with industry should begin with a clear understanding of each side’s needs and capabilities. Universities can provide scientific knowledge and research expertise, while industry can help identify challenges that require practical solutions.

“We are now placing greater emphasis on working with industry so that our work can create an impact. For us, impact means bringing research closer to real-world use,” Kuwat said at the event at the MICC Hotel Alana Yogyakarta on Monday, September 21.

Prof. Kuwat said partnerships should produce more than formal agreements between institutions. They should create opportunities to develop research based on actual challenges and apply the resulting knowledge outside the university.

He also pointed to the role of FMIPA UGM’s alumni network. Alumni working in different sectors and regions can share information about changing needs outside the university. Their input can help the faculty adjust its education and research programs to developments in society and industry.

Andrias Ekoyuono, chief of AI and corporate strategy at Kumparan and a representative of FMIPA UGM’s strategic partners, said he appreciated the innovations developed by the faculty. He also noted the continued growth of cooperation between FMIPA UGM and industry.

The Alumni Inspiration Award recognized PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, Kumparan, PT Astra Agro Lestari, and the Tegalombo Village Government in Pacitan.

The Research and Community Service Contribution Award recognized PT Pertamina (Persero), PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan, PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam, PT Pertamina EP Zona 4 Regional 1, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy, PT Elnusa Tbk, PT Geosciences Indonesia Servis, the Nyamplung Biofuel Research Collaboration Center–BRIN, PT Indominco Mandiri, PT Tesso Tetra Chemicals, and PT Satria Duta Raya.

The Education Dedication Award recognized Wadhwani Foundation Chapter Indonesia, Universitas Prasetiya Mulya, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, Akademi Komunitas Toyota Indonesia, SMA Islam Al Azhar 9 Yogyakarta, and PT AXA Mandiri Financial Services.

The Strategic Partnership Awards 2026 reflects FMIPA UGM’s broader approach to building long-term relationships with external partners. Through these partnerships, the faculty aims to connect its academic expertise with practical needs in education, research, community service and innovation. The collaboration is expected to help bring scientific knowledge and research outcomes to wider use in society and industry.

The initiative also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education, SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals. By connecting academic expertise with industry and other external partners, FMIPA UGM contributes to stronger education, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration.
