G13 Alumni FMIPA UGM Forum Discusses the Contribution of Mathematics and Science and Science-Based Leadership Development
The Alumni Association of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada (KAMIPAGAMA) held the G13 Alumni FMIPA UGM Forum on September 19, 2026. The event discussed the role of mathematics and science in human resource development, as well as the contribution of mathematics and natural sciences (MIPA) to society.
The forum, titled “Are Science and Technology Still Relevant to UGM?”, featured Prof. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si., Widyanto Andono, Arief Prihantoro, and Fieti Josefa Purba, a 2024 cohort student of Mathematics at UGM. The event was moderated by Daniel Oscar Baskoro.
The forum also discussed efforts to develop students’ capacities and the application of MIPA knowledge in everyday life. The Dean of FMIPA UGM explained that the analytical skills developed through MIPA disciplines can be applied to various fields, including the assessment of leadership and management capabilities.
He noted that FMIPA is also working to establish a credible institution capable of producing measurements that can serve as a benchmark alongside survey institutions. In addition, FMIPA is currently developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based instrument to measure leadership and management capabilities.
“We are also developing an AI-based leadership and management assessment tool. We have never quantitatively assessed a person’s capabilities, even though these abilities need to be measured. People in MIPA are accustomed to measuring things systematically and through validated methods,” he said.
In addition to the development of assessment instruments, the forum highlighted the importance of fostering interest in science through activities closely connected to everyday life. Science education, it was noted, does not always have to rely on theoretical learning but can also be introduced by connecting scientific concepts with activities that people encounter in their daily lives.
The forum also emphasized the importance of scientific literacy for leaders. Scientific knowledge and data-driven thinking can serve as valuable tools for addressing various challenges and making informed decisions.
Meanwhile, Fieti Josefa Purba shared her experience as an FMIPA UGM student. She expressed her appreciation for the academic environment, which she said provides students with opportunities to grow and develop.
“FMIPA provides a lot of support for its students. FMIPA is also very open to students who want to grow and develop, so I am very grateful to have been accepted into FMIPA,” said Fieti.
The G13 Alumni FMIPA UGM Forum served as a platform for alumni, academics, and students to discuss developments in mathematics and natural sciences and their relevance to society’s needs. The forum also highlighted the importance of strengthening science-based human resource capacity, developing measurable and validated assessment methods, and applying MIPA knowledge across various fields.
The event was also aligned with the values of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education, through efforts to strengthen student capacity and promote applicable science learning. The development of AI-based assessment tools and efforts to encourage the application of MIPA knowledge across various fields also contribute to SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Meanwhile, efforts to foster data-driven and measurable leadership support the strengthening of effective governance and institutions, as reflected in SDG 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
