The material presented included an introduction to various types of celestial objects. Subsequently, seminar participants were invited to engage in training sessions as if they were about to embark on a space journey as astronomers, through various tests conducted via the “Galaxy Cruise” website. If participants completed the tests, they received a boarding pass or ticket for exploration into space through the interactive “Galaxy Cruise” website.

“Why do galaxies have different forms of interaction?” asked one participant, who was a high school student.

Dr. Itsna then explained the types of galaxy interaction forms through the interactive “Galaxy Cruise” website.

The output of this research project is an interactive website that can be utilized by the public. Users can register through the website and participate in activities such as training sessions by answering various questions. The involvement of the public, including students, reflects Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 4, Quality Education through the Internet for teaching purposes and enhancing skills in technology, information, and communication (ICT). Researchers of Galaxy Cruise can also gain insights into the public’s understanding of celestial objects being researched as data, thus promoting partnership for the purpose of implementing SDG number 17, Partnerships for the Goals.

MIPA Leadership Program: Boosting Competence of Young Faculty Members at FMIPA UGM

Sharing session section among the participants (Photo: Yunus)

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UGM held the MIPA Leadership Program, which is a regular program aimed at understanding the needs and suggestions of young faculty members within the FMIPA UGM community. The event took place on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at FMIPA UGM, inviting faculty members under the age of 45. A total of 30 faculty members attended the event, both online and offline. The agenda began with a welcome and guidance from the Dean of FMIPA UGM, followed by a sharing session.

“I target everyone to become a leader; naturally, everyone will become leaders and be led, but leaders in this context are not just Deans or Heads of Departments, but leaders in their respective fields. Hopefully, we can prepare for that, and these young faculty members can express their complaints and ideas,” said Prof. Kuwat, the Dean of FMIPA UGM.

Faculty members present were allowed to voice their complaints during their tenure as faculty members. The Dean then responded. The most common complaint raised by young faculty members was the lack of eligibility to be the principal investigator in research grant offerings organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the heavy teaching workload that prevents them from focusing on research.

“There are many research proposals and collaboration offers from the Ministry of Education and Culture, but I have not met the eligibility criteria to be the principal investigator because my SINTA score is still below 300,” said Arifin, a young faculty member from the Physics Department.

“I have not met the criteria to be the principal investigator, and it’s difficult to find a senior faculty member to serve as the principal investigator due to their reluctance,” said Ertiningsih, a young faculty member from the Mathematics Department.

The Dean advised young faculty members to actively engage in discussions and invite senior faculty members to be principal investigators. Additionally, the Dean encouraged young faculty members to consult with the Dean and his team regarding their needs and to execute the formation of special teams.

The event concluded with a meal featuring typical Jogja cuisine. Through such activities, FMIPA UGM aims to enhance the productivity of faculty members to generate beneficial innovations for career advancement, universities, and society, in line with SDGs point 4 in improving the qualifications of faculty members and point 9 in meeting the needs of faculty and researcher resources in the field of science and technology.

Sugeng guided the students to recognize their capabilities to choose specializations in the subjects they will take.

“It’s like wearing clothes, if I wear your size, it definitely won’t fit. Conversely, if you wear my clothes, they will be too big. So, recognize your abilities and make choices in continuing your studies at the next level,” said Sugeng.
