Towards a Sustainable Future: ASEA-UNINET Unites Academic Forces to Address Global Challenges

The Asea-Uninet 19th Plenary Meeting, an assembly of the ASEAN-European Academic University Network, brought together academic strength through the promotion of scientific, cultural, and humanitarian relations, as well as personal contacts, scientific findings, and collaboration from February 26 to March 1, 2024, in Penang, Malaysia. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang hosted the event, attended by members from universities in Europe, including Austria, Italy, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEA-UNINET research projects span various disciplines, ranging from Sciences, Technology, Economics, Social Sciences, and Humanities to Medicine and Pharmacy. All research projects are based on voluntary participation from researchers, emphasizing the strengthening of individual and scientific capacities.

Prof. Dr. Harno Dwi Pranowo, M.S., representing Universitas Gadjah Mada, engaged in meetings and discussions with partners from Europe and ASEAN to plan cooperation for the next 18 months. Several discussions with partners have focused on strengthening joint research in the field of humanities related to museums and art conservation, science, and technology related to artificial intelligence, the design of drug compounds using computational chemistry approaches, and the implementation of student and researcher exchanges between member countries.

Topics discussed during this event include Alumni Engagement in ASEA-UNINET AND DIGITAL HUMANISM as a driver to address the urgent need for a holistic socio-technical approach to recent developments in computer science and artificial intelligence. Other topics include Funding Opportunities from ASEA-UNINET for Research, Strategies for Expanding the number of European Universities in ASEA-UNINET, and the diversification and Impact of European and National Funding Schemes for academic cooperation between Southeast Asia and Europe. ASEA-UNINET regularly awards the Bernd Rode Award to researchers who have contributed to scholarly development, and this is a result of collaboration with ASEA-UNINET. The categories are young researchers and senior researchers.

During this occasion, Prof. Harno also conducted visits and discussions with partners at the School of Chemical Sciences at USM to discuss closer collaboration regarding collaborative research, student and research exchanges, external examiners, the MBKM program, and joint seminars. This activity is related to the SDGs goal number 4, Quality Education, through the proportion of scholarships provided to students from developing countries, including the least developed countries, to study in other developing countries. ASEA-UNINET provides various scholarship programs to support the mobility of students and researchers between member countries. At the ASEA-UNINET 19th Plenary Meeting, funding opportunities for research and academic cooperation were discussed, including scholarship schemes for students and researchers.

Enhancing multi-stakeholder partnerships supporting the achievement of SDGs goal number 17, partnerships to achieve goals. ASEA-UNINET is a network connecting universities in Southeast Asia and Europe, promoting cooperation and collaboration in various academic fields. The ASEA-UNINET 19th Plenary Meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including universities, governments, and international organizations, demonstrating a commitment to strengthen cooperation in achieving SDGs goals.

SMAN 2 Tangerang at FMIPA UGM: Directing Students to Understand Self-Competence and Choose Majors at Higher Education Institutions

SMAN 2 Tangerang visited FMIPA UGM on Wednesday, Feb 28th, 2024. The visit was welcomed directly at the Auditorium Building of FMIPA UGM by Sugeng Triono S.Si., M.Si., a lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA UGM, as well as a speaker who provided information related to UGM and FMIPA UGM. 235 students and 10 teachers received information regarding the list of study programs, alumni networks, university registration procedures, faculty facilities, student career support programs, and more. In addition, a session for asking and answering questions took place. It provided insights or new information beneficial to both FMIPA and students and teachers.

“This visit is hopefully able to provide a positive and beneficial impact. Furthermore, this visit can enhance students’ learning,” said Eko Suoardiyono, S.T., the Student Council Advisor of SMAN 2 Tangerang.

Sugeng guided the students to recognize their capabilities to choose specializations in the subjects they will take.

“It’s like wearing clothes, if I wear your size, it definitely won’t fit. Conversely, if you wear my clothes, they will be too big. So, recognize your abilities and make choices in continuing your studies at the next level,” said Sugeng.

From the conducted school visit, FMIPA UGM supports SDGs point 4 regarding quality education by increasing students’ motivation to continue their education at higher education institutions and providing guidance according to their interests and talents. Furthermore, FMIPA UGM also welcomes educational institutions in partnerships to achieve goals in educational advancement by SDGs point 17.

Collaboration between FMIPA UGM and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency: Enhancing Human Resources in the Field of Science and Technology

FMIPA UGM received a visit from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Wednesday, Feb 28^th, 2024 at Merapi Room, Department of Geophysics, FMIPA UGM. This visit aims to strengthen collaboration to boost the number of human resources in the fields of science and technology through Physics postgraduate programs.

Prof. Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si., the Dean of FMIPA UGM, welcomed the presence and reinforcement of the collaboration. “The key to the success of an institution lies in the quality of its human resources. Even though the equipment and technology are complete, inadequate human resources can be risky,” said Prof. Kuwat.

In this regard, Dr.rer.nat. Wiwit Suryanto, S.Si., M.Si., a lecturer in Geophysics at FMIPA UGM, presented the types of study programs that BMKG employees can participate in, such as regular and research tracks. Furthermore, an introduction to learning facilities and support programs such as laboratories, field activities, and soft skills training was provided.

“Our graduates will not only be competent technically and scientifically but also in non-technical areas such as communication and work management. We also encourage students to commit to producing publications such as journals,” said Dr. Wiwit.

Nina Amelia Sasmita, M.Si., the Head of the Domestic Education Team at BMKG, expressed the purpose of the visit.

“We have many competent employees who are ready to pursue further education. Therefore, we need a learning program system that can accommodate our employees by dividing their time between studying and working. Additionally, we provide scholarships for our employees to complete their studies,” said Nina.

From the agenda of the visit, FMIPA UGM also supports SDGs points 4 and 7 regarding quality education and innovation by encouraging the number of researchers in the fields of science and technology in postgraduate programs. Furthermore, FMIPA UGM welcomes government agencies in partnerships to achieve the goal of increasing the number of researchers by SDGs point 17.

FMIPA UGM Welcomes Visit from University of Technology Sydney: Discusses Partnership Agenda Plans

The University of Technology Sydney conducted a visit to FMIPA UGM represented by Prof. Willia Huston and Prof. Alana Ammit on Thursday, 22^nd February 2024, at the FMIPA UGM Meeting Room. The purpose of this visit was to establish formal relations and introduce the profiles of each faculty in the field of science.

Prof. Drs. Roto, M.Eng., Ph.D., as the Vice Dean for Education, Teaching, and Student Affairs along with Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., as the Vice Dean for Alumni Affairs, Cooperation, and Innovation at FMIPA UGM, welcomed the presence and the initiation of cooperation. Dr. Roto and Dr. Fajar also provided an overview of the profile of FMIPA UGM along with its international-scale activities.

“We have established collaborations with various campuses such as the University of Birmingham, National Central University Taiwan, University of Twente, and others. FMIPA UGM also engages in innovative research with these campus partners,” said Dr. Roto.

“So, we want to create research collaborations between Indonesia and Australia,” said Prof. Ammit.

Additionally, both parties also discussed available scholarships such as government scholarships that will support students.

“Government scholarships are not only for master’s and doctoral programs but also for research for a few months,” said Dr. Wahyono, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Electronics at FMIPA UGM.

Several research outcomes were also presented as information on research fields produced, such as drones, x-rays, and artificial intelligence products developed by FMIPA UGM.

MAN 2 Tulungagung visited FMIPA UGM on Thursday, Feb 22^nd, 2024. The visit was warmly received by Sugeng Triyono, S.Si., M.Si., a Chemistry lecturer at FMIPA UGM and also a resource person providing information about UGM and FMIPA UGM. Students and teachers received information regarding the list of study programs, alumni networks, university admission procedures, faculty facilities, student career support programs, and more. Additionally, there was a Q&A session aimed at providing insights or new information for both FMIPA and the students and teachers.

“I am delighted to visit FMIPA UGM. The material presented is in line with what I expected, which is to provide insights and motivation to students as they choose subjects according to their interests,” said Yayuk Winarti, S.Si., M.Pd., Deputy Head of School at MAN 2 Tulungagung.

FMIPA UGM Welcomes Khon Kaen University Visit: Discusses Partnership Agenda

Khon Kaen University from Thailand conducted a visit to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), represented by Dr. Sukhum Ruangchai, Assistant to the Dean for International Affairs and Public Communications, on Wednesday, Feb 21^st, 2024, at the FMIPA UGM Meeting Room. The purpose of this visit was to establish formal relations and introduce the profiles of each faculty in the field of science.

“We have various international programs. One of them is the KKU ASEAN-GMS (Khon Kaen University Scholarship for ASEAN and GMS Countries’ Personnel), which is open to prospective master’s and doctoral students at our university,” said Dr. Sukhum.

Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., as the Vice Dean for Alumni Affairs, Cooperation, and Innovation at FMIPA UGM, welcomed the presence and the initiation of cooperation. Dr. Fajar also presented an overview of the profile of FMIPA UGM along with its international-scale activities.

“Students need to gain international experiences. They also need to be involved in research activities,” said Dr. Fajar.

The introduction of each faculty focused on profiles, facilities, research, and innovation outcomes, as well as programs supporting student and faculty activities. With this, each party can get to know more closely the information needed regarding studies in the field of science.

Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery Innovation: Geophysics FMIPA UGM and Upstream Innovation PHE Research Collaboration Is Ready for Field Deployment

The collaboration between Geophysics FMIPA UGM and Upstream Innovation PHE in its third year through Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery innovation is poised to enter the field. This effort is aimed at supporting the government’s program to increase oil production targets by 1 million barrels by 2030 in Indonesia. The UGM Geophysics Research Team, along with Upstream Innovation PHE, actively contributes to achieving this goal.

“Through this research collaboration, our (FMIPA UGM) hope is to support the government’s target of 1 million barrels of oil production,” said Prof. Kuwat Triyana, Dean of FMIPA UGM, during the “Kickoff Meeting for the Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery Collaboration Study in 2024” held via online meeting on Monday, Jan 12^th, 2024.

In 2023, initial field testing was conducted to assess the performance of the Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery equipment. By continually improving the quality of this equipment, the UGM Geophysics Research Team and Upstream Innovation PHE are confident that they are ready to enter the field for broader oil production in 2024.

“We appreciate the trust placed in us over the past few years. We continue to strive in the development of this Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery equipment to support the 1 million barrel production target in Indonesia,” said Dr. Afif Rakhman, head of the UGM Geophysics Research Team.

Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery is one of the supportive methods in oil exploitation by injecting high-powered direct current (DC) into reservoirs to enhance production. By installing anodes and cathodes at specific distances and configurations, the electric current can alter the physical properties of the rocks it passes through, facilitating the movement of oil beneath the earth’s surface. The equipment developed by this team also features remote control capabilities through the internet network.

“This developed technology is easily implementable due to its relatively simple installation process and online operation, making it more effective and efficient in terms of time and cost,” said Metrik Pradana, initiator of the Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery research from Upstream Innovation PHE.

The technological innovation built through collaboration between institutions and industry partners is an effort to support government programs, particularly in contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This research collaboration reflects point 9 – Infrastructure, Industry, and Innovation, through innovation in meeting the country’s energy needs, as well as point 17 – Partnerships to Achieve Goals, through collaborative efforts to meet the goal of national oil requirements production.

UGM Hosts Technical Guidance on Social Media Management: Encouraging Media Contributors in Focused Content Production and Publication

UGM held a Technical Guidance on Social Media Management on Tuesday, Feb 13^th, 2024, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM. The speakers at this event were the UGM Public Relations Team, consisting of Devi Anviana Putri (graphic designer, video editor, and UGM social media admin), Astri Wulandari (media relations and host of UGM podcast), and Gloria Exoudianta Barus (journalist and live manager of UGM Update). The purpose of this event, attended by representatives from the media units, is to encourage contributors and media admins to be more productive and focused in their production and publication activities. Additionally, the event aims to provide insights into the types and uses of social media according to the content needs.

In opening the event, Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean for Alumni, Cooperation, and Innovation at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, expressed appreciation for the event’s organization. Dr. Fajar also emphasized the urgency of social media management concerning the institution’s image as reflected in social media publications. UGM Public Relations Coordinator, Hestining Kurniastuti, S.S., MBA, stated that this event is a crucial discussion space for sharing experiences in social media management within the UGM environment.

During the discussion session, media representatives from various units shared their challenges in managing social media. “Our media was neglected for 2 years. How can we manage our media effectively?” asked one participant. Another highlighted question during the event was about managing content production systems, coordinating media teams, and formulating good content. The three speakers then guided social media management, such as content mapping and timeline creation. “So, we must prepare materials to be uploaded according to the existing schedule. For example, next month is Ramadan. Now, we should prepare materials to be uploaded during Ramadan,” explained Astri.

This technical guidance has had a positive impact on the media team participants. The expected outcome is to enhance their understanding and mastery of technology and information in reporting within the UGM environment. This reflects the SDGs point 4, which is quality education through information and communication technology skills. Thus, the skills possessed by the media teams in each unit are expected to drive more focused content production, publication, and reporting.
