Scientific Visit of the State Cyber Polytechnic and National Cryptography at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Students Attend Mathematics and Computer Science Classes

The State Cyber Polytechnic and National Cryptography visited the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences on Tuesday, Mar 5^th, 2024. The visit was warmly welcomed in the Seminar Room of the Department of Mathematics at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences by Prof. Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Sc., as the Dean of the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., as the Mathematics lecture. A total of 4 students and 1 accompanying lecturer had the opportunity to experience attending classes at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences through classes in the Mathematics and Computer Science programs. R. Tjahjo Khurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., as the Director of the State Cyber Polytechnic and National Cryptography, also attended the opening ceremony.

“With the existence of a cryptography research center at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, in the future, hopefully, it can facilitate the development of knowledge and support us in cyber security,” said R. Tjahjo.

In this regard, Prof. Kuwat, as the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, welcomed the conducted visit and further encouraged the impact of the established cooperation up to the industrial sector.

“The established cooperation can drive industrialization in the field of cryptography,” said Prof. Kuwat.

From the conducted scientific visit of the State Cyber Polytechnic and National Cryptography, the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences also supports point 4 of the SDGs regarding quality education through the enhancement of technology, information, and communication (ICT) skills through the attended classes. Furthermore, the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences also welcomes educational institutions in partnership to achieve goals in the advancement of education by point 17 of the SDGs.

Visit of SMAN 11 Bekasi to FMIPA UGM: Directing Students in Understanding Self-Competence and Choosing Majors at Higher Education Institutions

SMAN 11 Bekasi visited FMIPA UGM on Friday, Mar 8^th, 2024. The visit was welcomed directly at the FMIPA UGM Auditorium by Sugeng Triono S.Si., M.Si., a lecturer from the Department of Chemistry at FMIPA UGM and also a speaker providing information related to UGM and FMIPA UGM. 195 students and 5 teachers received information regarding the list of study programs, alumni networks, university admission procedures, faculty facilities, student career support programs, and more. In addition, there was a question and answer session that provided insights or new information for both FMIPA and students and teachers.

“This visit is expected to provide information related to tips and tricks for entering UGM and to encourage students to study diligently,” said Hajah Wijayanti, S.I.P., M.Pd., as the Principal of SMAN 11 Bekasi.

Sugeng guided the students to recognize their capabilities so that they could choose a specialization in the subjects they would take. “Like wearing clothes, if I wear your size, it definitely won’t fit. Conversely, if you wear my clothes, they will be too big. So, recognize your abilities and make choices in continuing your studies to the next level,” said Sugeng.

From the conducted school visit, FMIPA UGM supported SDGs point 4 regarding quality education by increasing students’ motivation to continue their education at higher education institutions and providing guidance according to their interests and talents. In addition, FMIPA UGM also welcomed educational institutions in partnerships to achieve goals in the field of education advancement in line with SDGs point 17.

MTS 1 Ponorogo visited FMIPA UGM on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. The visit was warmly received at the Auditorium Building of FMIPA UGM by Dr. Dwi Ertiningsih, M.Sc., a lecturer from the Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UGM, who also served as the resource person providing information about UGM and FMIPA UGM. A total of 125 students and 2 teachers received information about the list of study programs, alumni networks, university admission procedures, faculty facilities, student career support programs, and more. Additionally, there was a question and answer session that provided insights or new information for both FMIPA and the students and teachers.

“We hope that this visit can have a positive and beneficial impact. Furthermore, this visit can enhance students’ learning,” said Eko Suoardiyono, S.T., the Supervisor of MTS 1 Ponorogo.

Dr. Ertin provided an overview of university life and the various departments available at FMIPA UGM. “If there is a school principal at school, here we have a Dean who leads the faculty. Here, there are 4 departments and 8 majors,” said Dr. Ertin.

Through the conducted school visit, FMIPA UGM supports SDGs point 4 regarding quality education by increasing students’ motivation to continue their education at the tertiary level and providing guidance according to their interests and talents. UGM Delegation Attends International Symposium on Volcano Monitoring for Immediate Action Against Disaster

A delegation from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) attended an International Symposium on Volcano Monitoring for Immediate Disaster Response at the Mount Fuji Research Institute in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan on March, 4^th 2024. This event is an important milestone in the Grassroots Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Project, titled “Building a Disaster-Resistant Community through the Utilisation of Local Universities as a Base for Responding to Low Frequency, Large-Scale Disasters.” This collaborative initiation, launched in 2022 and set to last until 2025, represents a strong relationship between Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Udayana, and Bali’s disaster volunteer network. Dr. Ade Anggraini, a seismologist from UGM, wholeheartedly supports this project.

Pioneering research and collaborative efforts.

Dr. Wiwit Suryanto from UGM attracted delegates at the conference with his presentation on “Efforts towards Maintaining Volcano Monitoring Stations through Local Universities in Indonesia.” Dr. Suryanto’s ideas shed light on the vital link between universities, research agencies and the community, emphasizing creative techniques and the crucial role of academic institutions in disaster preparedness to develop state-of-the-art technology for monitoring, detecting and understanding the structure of a volcano.

Dr. Kazuya Yamakawa of the Mount Fuji Research Institute (MFRI) spoke “Volcanic Infrasound Observation for Quick Detection of Eruption Vents,” providing ground-breaking perspectives on the early detection of volcanic activity. This research is critical for communities living near active volcanoes to mitigate the impact of possible disasters.

Mr. Alvin Yesaya from Universitas Udayana and Mr. Suta Wijaya, Chair of the Bali Province Disaster Risk Reduction Forum, represented the project’s collaborative spirit by sharing their experiences and collective efforts in Bali. Their comments highlight the value of local participation and volunteers in disaster resilience.

Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals.

This symposium and the broader project strongly align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13. This effort, which focuses on disaster risk reduction and the use of scientific research for community safety, illustrates a proactive approach to protecting vulnerable people from natural catastrophes.

A beacon of hope for future generations.

The UGM delegation’s participation at the International Symposium on Volcano Monitoring demonstrates not only their dedication to academic success and community engagement but also serves as a light of hope for future generations. It emphasizes the significance of international collaboration, local engagement, and the critical role of education in disaster-resistant societies.

This project and similar initiatives remind us of the power of collective action and the crucial need to be prepared for natural disasters. The quest for a safer, more resilient world continues, with academia and community collaborations at the forefront.

DWP FMIPA UGM Holds Social Service: Providing Basic Supplies for Security and Cleaning Staff at FMIPA UGM

DWP (Dharma Wanita Persatuan/Women’s Union for Duty) FMIPA UGM held a social service event in anticipation of the fasting month (Ramadan) at the courtyard of FMIPA UGM on Friday, March 8, 2024. The target of this social service activity is the security and cleaning staff at FMIPA UGM. As the fasting month approaches, the prices of basic necessities such as rice, oil, and eggs increase, so this activity is expected to provide assistance.

“The proceeds from the sales at the FMIPA canteen by our DWP were used to purchase basic supplies to be distributed free of charge to the cleaning and security staff. Hopefully, it can help during the upcoming fasting month,” said Nurun Djamilatun, Chairperson of DWP FMIPA UGM.

“Basic groceries are expensive now, especially as Ramadan approaches. I feel greatly helped by the assistance provided by DWP FMIPA UGM,” said one of the aid recipients.

This social service activity is an implementation of SDG number 1, which aims to eradicate poverty by supporting food supplies, and number 2, which aims to end hunger by improving the quality of food consumption. The hope is that this activity will continue to support social conditions and welfare, especially in fulfilling basic needs within the FMIPA UGM community.

FMIPA UGM Holds Socialization of Creative Innovation Grants 2024 for FMIPA UGM’s Staff

FMIPA UGM holds a Socialization on Creative Innovation Grants for the Fiscal Year 2024 for Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UGM staff on Friday, 8th March 2024, at the Auditorium, 7th floor, FMIPA UGM. These Creative Innovation Grants are a routine program of the faculty aimed at providing support for educational staff to innovate in service improvement focusing on information technology and human resource effectiveness. The socialization begins with the launch of the educational staff creative innovation grants by the Vice Dean for Research and Community Service Affairs at FMIPA UGM.

“This is one of FMIPA UGM’s missions to transform in line with current digital technology developments, so we want routine tasks to be automated, and we hope for input from all of you because you understand the business processes,” says Dr.rer.nat. Wiwit Suryanto, B.Sc., M.Sc., Vice Dean for Research and Community Service Affairs at FMIPA UGM. The grant competition is open to all educational staff within FMIPA UGM, with funding ranging from Rp. 5 million to Rp. 20 million for each grant proposal.

“What FMIPA needs is digital transformation; we shouldn’t keep doing routine tasks continuously, so propose to make them systematic,” says Prof. Kuwat Triyana, Dean of FMIPA UGM. The socialization also includes presentations from three representatives of the 2023 Educational Staff Creative Innovation Grant recipients:

Alvin Yovi Dwi Putra with the proposal title “EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT, AND INTEGRATED ROOM BORROWING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM”.
David Julian Nggebu, S.E., with the proposal title “Procedure and Inventory Management System Governance Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UGM”, and
Suswiyanti Rahayu, A.Md., with the proposal title “YUDISIUM INFORMATION SYSTEM AT THE FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS AND NATURAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITAS GADJAH MADA”.

Deans and Vice Deans within FMIPA provide an open forum for all educational staff at FMIPA interested in consulting on their creative ideas. The educational staff at FMIPA UGM interested in applying for grant proposals can access further information and guidance through the grant system.

Through such activities, educational staff are expected to innovate with information technology in more effective and efficient service at FMIPA, reflecting SDGs number 9 through the quality of human resources in the field of technology.

Towards a Sustainable Future: ASEA-UNINET Unites Academic Forces to Address Global Challenges

The Asea-Uninet 19th Plenary Meeting, an assembly of the ASEAN-European Academic University Network, brought together academic strength through the promotion of scientific, cultural, and humanitarian relations, as well as personal contacts, scientific findings, and collaboration from February 26 to March 1, 2024, in Penang, Malaysia. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang hosted the event, attended by members from universities in Europe, including Austria, Italy, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEA-UNINET research projects span various disciplines, ranging from Sciences, Technology, Economics, Social Sciences, and Humanities to Medicine and Pharmacy. All research projects are based on voluntary participation from researchers, emphasizing the strengthening of individual and scientific capacities.

Prof. Dr. Harno Dwi Pranowo, M.S., representing Universitas Gadjah Mada, engaged in meetings and discussions with partners from Europe and ASEAN to plan cooperation for the next 18 months. Several discussions with partners have focused on strengthening joint research in the field of humanities related to museums and art conservation, science, and technology related to artificial intelligence, the design of drug compounds using computational chemistry approaches, and the implementation of student and researcher exchanges between member countries.

Topics discussed during this event include Alumni Engagement in ASEA-UNINET AND DIGITAL HUMANISM as a driver to address the urgent need for a holistic socio-technical approach to recent developments in computer science and artificial intelligence. Other topics include Funding Opportunities from ASEA-UNINET for Research, Strategies for Expanding the number of European Universities in ASEA-UNINET, and the diversification and Impact of European and National Funding Schemes for academic cooperation between Southeast Asia and Europe. ASEA-UNINET regularly awards the Bernd Rode Award to researchers who have contributed to scholarly development, and this is a result of collaboration with ASEA-UNINET. The categories are young researchers and senior researchers.

During this occasion, Prof. Harno also conducted visits and discussions with partners at the School of Chemical Sciences at USM to discuss closer collaboration regarding collaborative research, student and research exchanges, external examiners, the MBKM program, and joint seminars. This activity is related to the SDGs goal number 4, Quality Education, through the proportion of scholarships provided to students from developing countries, including the least developed countries, to study in other developing countries. ASEA-UNINET provides various scholarship programs to support the mobility of students and researchers between member countries. At the ASEA-UNINET 19th Plenary Meeting, funding opportunities for research and academic cooperation were discussed, including scholarship schemes for students and researchers.

Enhancing multi-stakeholder partnerships supporting the achievement of SDGs goal number 17, partnerships to achieve goals. ASEA-UNINET is a network connecting universities in Southeast Asia and Europe, promoting cooperation and collaboration in various academic fields. The ASEA-UNINET 19th Plenary Meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including universities, governments, and international organizations, demonstrating a commitment to strengthen cooperation in achieving SDGs goals.

Lectures of FMIPA UGM Participates in Developing International Talent Development Modules: Boosting Student Quality in International Science Competitions

Lectures from FMIPA UGM, including Dr. Nanang Susyanto, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Mathematics), Dr. Eng. Rinto Anugraha NQZ, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Physics), Mokhammad Fajar Pradipta, B.Sc., M.Eng. (Chemistry), and Muhammad Idham Darussalam Mardjan, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Chemistry), were involved in the preparation of international talent development modules at the Golden Boutique Hotel Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Feb 18^th – 21^st 2024. The event, organized by the National Achievement Centre (Puspresnas), aims to prepare development modules to train and mentor secondary school students (middle and high school) to enhance their performance in international talent competitions.

These international talent competitions include the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), International Biology Olympiad (IBO), International Geography Olympiad (iGeo), International Economics Olympiad (IEO), International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC), World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC), and International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

This development process involves several stages, starting from national-level selection, and intensive coaching, to sending students to international talent competitions. The Head of Puspresnas, Dr. Maria Veronica Irene Herdjiono, B.Sc., M.Sc., states that this initiative is one of Puspresnas’ efforts to enhance Indonesian students’ achievements in international talent competitions.

“International talent development is crucial to improve the performance of Indonesian students on the international stage. With structured and systematic development modules, Indonesian students can better compete in international talent competitions,” says Dr. Maria.

“Quality education is one of the keys to enhancing student performance. Additionally, addressing climate change is also a focus in international talent development, as the International Earth Science Olympiad often addresses climate change-related disaster themes,” adds Dr. Maria.

Puspresnas hopes that with these international talent development modules, the achievements of Indonesian students in international talent competitions will increase. This activity is also aligned with SDG number 4 on quality education through enhancing mathematics skills for students and number 13 on addressing climate change through mainstreaming sustainable global citizenship education.
