FMIPA UGM Students Achieve Outstanding Results at the 2026 International Mathematics Competition (IMC) in Bulgaria
Two students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) represented Indonesia at the 2026 International Mathematics Competition (IMC), held from July 27 to August 3, 2026, at the American University in Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. Both students are from the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM. Muhammad Hanif won a Bronze Medal, while Fajar Arif Shodiqin received an Honorable Mention.
Hanif and Fajar were among five students selected to represent Indonesia at IMC 2026. According to the official Department of Mathematics website, both students first went through a series of selection rounds beginning with the National Mathematics and Natural Sciences Olympiad for Higher Education (ONMIPA-PT). Gold, silver, and bronze medalists, as well as recipients of honorable mentions at ONMIPA-PT, were subsequently invited to participate in the national selection process to determine Indonesia’s representatives for IMC 2026.
Prior to competing in Bulgaria, the five Indonesian delegates underwent intensive training organized at Hotel MM UGM and the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM. The training was aimed at strengthening their mastery of mathematical concepts while preparing them for the challenges of an international mathematics competition.
The selection and training process ultimately yielded notable results at IMC 2026. Muhammad Hanif won a Bronze Medal, while Fajar Arif Shodiqin received an Honorable Mention. Their achievements represent a proud accomplishment for the students of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, while also bringing recognition to UGM and Indonesia on the international stage.
The achievements of FMIPA UGM students at IMC 2026 also support efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education. Participation in an international mathematics competition contributes to the development of academic competence, analytical thinking skills, and learning experiences aligned with global standards. These achievements further strengthen FMIPA UGM’s contribution to preparing young people with strong academic capabilities and the competitiveness needed to contribute to the advancement of science.
