FMIPA UGM Welcomes Visit from University of Technology Sydney: Discusses Partnership Agenda Plans

The University of Technology Sydney conducted a visit to FMIPA UGM represented by Prof. Willia Huston and Prof. Alana Ammit on Thursday, 22nd February 2024, at the FMIPA UGM Meeting Room. The purpose of this visit was to establish formal relations and introduce the profiles of each faculty in the field of science.

Prof. Drs. Roto, M.Eng., Ph.D., as the Vice Dean for Education, Teaching, and Student Affairs along with Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., as the Vice Dean for Alumni Affairs, Cooperation, and Innovation at FMIPA UGM, welcomed the presence and the initiation of cooperation. Dr. Roto and Dr. Fajar also provided an overview of the profile of FMIPA UGM along with its international-scale activities.

“We have established collaborations with various campuses such as the University of Birmingham, National Central University Taiwan, University of Twente, and others. FMIPA UGM also engages in innovative research with these campus partners,” said Dr. Roto.

“So, we want to create research collaborations between Indonesia and Australia,” said Prof. Ammit.

Additionally, both parties also discussed available scholarships such as government scholarships that will support students.

“Government scholarships are not only for master’s and doctoral programs but also for research for a few months,” said Dr. Wahyono, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Electronics at FMIPA UGM.

Several research outcomes were also presented as information on research fields produced, such as drones, x-rays, and artificial intelligence products developed by FMIPA UGM.

From the agenda of the visit, FMIPA UGM also supports SDGs point 4 regarding quality education through scholarship partnerships from each university. Additionally, FMIPA UGM welcomes educational institutions in partnerships to achieve goals in the advancement of education in accordance with SDGs point 17.

Visit of MAN 2 Tulungagung to FMIPA UGM: Directing Students in Understanding Self-Competence for Specialization in Science Subjects at School

MAN 2 Tulungagung visited FMIPA UGM on Thursday, Feb 22nd, 2024. The visit was warmly received by Sugeng Triyono, S.Si., M.Si., a Chemistry lecturer at FMIPA UGM and also a resource person providing information about UGM and FMIPA UGM. Students and teachers received information regarding the list of study programs, alumni networks, university admission procedures, faculty facilities, student career support programs, and more. Additionally, there was a Q&A session aimed at providing insights or new information for both FMIPA and the students and teachers.

“I am delighted to visit FMIPA UGM. The material presented is in line with what I expected, which is to provide insights and motivation to students as they choose subjects according to their interests,” said Yayuk Winarti, S.Si., M.Pd., Deputy Head of School at MAN 2 Tulungagung.

Sugeng guided the students to recognize their capabilities so they could choose specializations in the subjects they would take.

“Like wearing clothes, if I wear your size, it definitely won’t fit. Conversely, if you wear my clothes, they will be too big. So, recognize your abilities and make choices in selecting subjects at school,” said Sugeng.

From the school visit conducted, FMIPA UGM also supports SDGs point 4 regarding quality education by increasing students’ motivation to continue their education at the tertiary level and providing guidance according to their interests and talents. Khon Kaen University from Thailand conducted a visit to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), represented by Dr. Sukhum Ruangchai, Assistant to the Dean for International Affairs and Public Communications, on Wednesday, Feb 21st, 2024, at the FMIPA UGM Meeting Room. The purpose of this visit was to establish formal relations and introduce the profiles of each faculty in the field of science.

“We have various international programs. One of them is the KKU ASEAN-GMS (Khon Kaen University Scholarship for ASEAN and GMS Countries’ Personnel), which is open to prospective master’s and doctoral students at our university,” said Dr. Sukhum.

Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., as the Vice Dean for Alumni Affairs, Cooperation, and Innovation at FMIPA UGM, welcomed the presence and the initiation of cooperation. Dr. Fajar also presented an overview of the profile of FMIPA UGM along with its international-scale activities.

“Students need to gain international experiences. They also need to be involved in research activities,” said Dr. Fajar.

Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery Innovation: Geophysics FMIPA UGM and Upstream Innovation PHE Research Collaboration Is Ready for Field Deployment

The collaboration between Geophysics FMIPA UGM and Upstream Innovation PHE in its third year through Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery innovation is poised to enter the field. This effort is aimed at supporting the government’s program to increase oil production targets by 1 million barrels by 2030 in Indonesia. The UGM Geophysics Research Team, along with Upstream Innovation PHE, actively contributes to achieving this goal.

“Through this research collaboration, our (FMIPA UGM) hope is to support the government’s target of 1 million barrels of oil production,” said Prof. Kuwat Triyana, Dean of FMIPA UGM, during the “Kickoff Meeting for the Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery Collaboration Study in 2024” held via online meeting on Monday, Jan 12th, 2024.

In 2023, initial field testing was conducted to assess the performance of the Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery equipment. By continually improving the quality of this equipment, the UGM Geophysics Research Team and Upstream Innovation PHE are confident that they are ready to enter the field for broader oil production in 2024.

“We appreciate the trust placed in us over the past few years. We continue to strive in the development of this Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery equipment to support the 1 million barrel production target in Indonesia,” said Dr. Afif Rakhman, head of the UGM Geophysics Research Team.

Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery is one of the supportive methods in oil exploitation by injecting high-powered direct current (DC) into reservoirs to enhance production. By installing anodes and cathodes at specific distances and configurations, the electric current can alter the physical properties of the rocks it passes through, facilitating the movement of oil beneath the earth’s surface. The equipment developed by this team also features remote control capabilities through the internet network.

“This developed technology is easily implementable due to its relatively simple installation process and online operation, making it more effective and efficient in terms of time and cost,” said Metrik Pradana, initiator of the Electrically Enhanced Oil Recovery research from Upstream Innovation PHE.

The technological innovation built through collaboration between institutions and industry partners is an effort to support government programs, particularly in contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This research collaboration reflects point 9 – Infrastructure, Industry, and Innovation, through innovation in meeting the country’s energy needs, as well as point 17 – Partnerships to Achieve Goals, through collaborative efforts to meet the goal of national oil requirements production.

UGM Hosts Technical Guidance on Social Media Management: Encouraging Media Contributors in Focused Content Production and Publication

The speakers deliver content regarding the structure of public relations and media

UGM held a Technical Guidance on Social Media Management on Tuesday, Feb 13th, 2024, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM. The speakers at this event were the UGM Public Relations Team, consisting of Devi Anviana Putri (graphic designer, video editor, and UGM social media admin), Astri Wulandari (media relations and host of UGM podcast), and Gloria Exoudianta Barus (journalist and live manager of UGM Update). The purpose of this event, attended by representatives from the media units, is to encourage contributors and media admins to be more productive and focused in their production and publication activities. Additionally, the event aims to provide insights into the types and uses of social media according to the content needs.

In opening the event, Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean for Alumni, Cooperation, and Innovation at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, expressed appreciation for the event’s organization. Dr. Fajar also emphasized the urgency of social media management concerning the institution’s image as reflected in social media publications. UGM Public Relations Coordinator, Hestining Kurniastuti, S.S., MBA, stated that this event is a crucial discussion space for sharing experiences in social media management within the UGM environment.

During the discussion session, media representatives from various units shared their challenges in managing social media. “Our media was neglected for 2 years. How can we manage our media effectively?” asked one participant. Another highlighted question during the event was about managing content production systems, coordinating media teams, and formulating good content. The three speakers then guided social media management, such as content mapping and timeline creation. “So, we must prepare materials to be uploaded according to the existing schedule. For example, next month is Ramadan. Now, we should prepare materials to be uploaded during Ramadan,” explained Astri.

This technical guidance has had a positive impact on the media team participants. The expected outcome is to enhance their understanding and mastery of technology and information in reporting within the UGM environment. This reflects the SDGs point 4, which is quality education through information and communication technology skills. Thus, the skills possessed by the media teams in each unit are expected to drive more focused content production, publication, and reporting.

Visit of SD IT BIAS Yogyakarta to the Department of Physics UGM: Introducing Fun Science Phenomena

Science Experiment at The Basic Physics Laboratory of the Departement of Physics UGM

The Basic Physics Laboratory of the Department of Physics UGM welcomed a visit from students of SD IT BIAS Yogyakarta on February 12, 2024. The purpose of this visit was to foster motivation and aspirations among the students in the field of science. Additionally, the students were encouraged to familiarize themselves with science and its phenomena through enjoyable methods in the laboratory.

A total of 100 students from SD IT BIAS Yogyakarta, comprising students from grades 5 and 6, were divided into two large groups. The first group visited the heat chamber and learned about phenomena closely related to physics. Guided by Dr. Chotimah, M.Sc. and Dr. Eko Sulistya, M.Sc., the students were engaged in presentations and demonstrations of physics experiments such as the coefficient of friction between two objects, the conversion of electrical energy into heat energy, and series of incandescent lamps.

The second group visited the mechanics chamber to get a closer look at phenomena with elements of geophysics. With enthusiasm, the students listened to a presentation delivered by Dr.rer.nat. Ade Anggraeni, B.Sc., M.Sc., regarding natural phenomena that frequently occur in Yogyakarta such as earthquakes. The students were introduced to instruments designed to capture seismic waves from seismic sources. Dr. Ade demonstrated the monitoring activities of active volcanoes like Mount Merapi using experimental models. Idham Syah Alam, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., introduced physics experiments, such as resonance tubes and lattice experiments.

In the subsequent session, both groups swapped spaces to ensure they had the same experience of enjoying fun science learning at the Department of Physics UGM. While observing the experimental demonstrations by the lecturers, students were coached to record their outputs in Student Worksheets (LKS) regarding the experiments demonstrated.

The collaborative learning opportunity held at the Basic Physics Laboratory is one form of activity that supports Sustainable Development Goals pillars 4 and 17, concerning quality education and partnerships to achieve goals, as students directly benefit from accessing concrete learning experiences according to their educational stages. In this regard, students can enhance their skills in reading and mathematics. On the other hand, schools have the opportunity to access partnerships to boost students’ motivation for completing their educational journey.

Visit of Prof. Xiao Yongshun from National Tsinghua University to the Department of Physics FMIPA UGM: Prospects for Research and Academic Collaboration

The Department of Physics at FMIPA UGM welcomed a visit from Prof. Xiao Yongshun from the Department of Engineering Physics, National Tsinghua University on Feb 12th, 2024. This visit is part of his series of visits to several institutions in Indonesia such as the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and UGM. During this visit, Prof. Xiao Yongshun was greeted directly by Prof. Gede Bayu Suparta, Prof. Edi Suharyadi (Chair of the Department), and Prof. Kuwat Triyana (Dean of FMIPA UGM). The agenda included discussions on the potential for research and academic collaboration between the two institutions.

The Department of Physics at FMIPA UGM has a unique focus on research addressing local issues, which is part of the Tri Dharma of higher education. Its research focuses on volcanology and the application of radiation technologies such as digital radiography and CT scans. During the visit, Prof. Xiao Yongshun showed great interest in these unique aspects, which became the main points of discussion. The potential use of muons in volcanology research also drew attention, considering the high activity of Mount Merapi which requires constant monitoring. It is hoped that the utilization of muons in monitoring Mount Merapi’s activity can contribute significantly to understanding the characteristics of its activity and disaster risk mitigation.

The research conducted at the Department of Physics UGM has a close correlation with research in the field of radiography applications at Tsinghua University. Prof. Xiao Yongshun, who specializes in X-ray and neutron imaging research, presented on radiography research at Tsinghua University. He is also a member of the Chinese Society of NDT (Non-Destructive Testing). Tsinghua University has had the NUCTECH company since 1997, which operates in the fields of radiation technology applications, image processing, artificial intelligence, and radiation protection.

Tsinghua University views UGM as one of the top universities in Indonesia with unique research capabilities. By involving BRIN in research collaboration, the Department of Physics UGM plans to further develop collaboration with Tsinghua University in the field of muon imaging, as well as in CT-Scan and radiography using X-ray radiation generated with LINAC (Linear Accelerator) technology. This collaboration is expected to positively contribute to advancing science and technology, education, student exchange, and expert cooperation between the two countries.

Radiography research by the Department of Physics UGM to address local issues such as health and natural disasters represents SDGs number 3, which is good health and well-being, number 11, which is sustainable cities and communities, and number 17, which is partnerships. This is evident from medical interventions through CT scans as part of essential healthcare services, disaster management, and established cooperation agreements. Thus, the agenda of the visit and the cooperation undertaken have an impact in line with the needs of the SDGs points.

MAN 1 Surakarta’s Trip to Department of Physics: Enhancing Students’ Scientific Curiosity through Basic Physics Experimentation

MAN 1 Surakarta visited the Department of Physics at FMIPA UGM on Feb 6th, 2024. The event took place in the Basic Physics Laboratory of the Department of Physics building. The visit aimed to foster students’ enthusiasm for science and enhance their grasp of the essential principles of physical measurement in physics. The Department of Physics provided the Basic Physics Laboratory as a venue for students to conduct hands-on experiments

A group of 72 students attended the visit. They were distributed among 12 practical groups, each supervised by capable laboratory assistants aligned with their experiment themes. The students received an introduction to the background of their experiments before being guided through measurements, presentations, data analysis, and the compilation of final reports.

The visit by MAN 1 Surakarta, which engaged its students in practical tasks, showcases the Department of Physics, especially the Basic Physics Laboratory, as a facilitator. This also contributes to advancing SDGs Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Furthermore, this visit enhances the bond between the Department of Physics and schools. Additionally, it provides an avenue for the department to directly enrich secondary school education and community involvement.

UGM Hosts Technical Guidance on Social Media Management: Encouraging Media Contributors in Focused Content Production and Publication

The speakers deliver content regarding the structure of public relations and media

UGM held a Technical Guidance on Social Media Management on Tuesday, Feb 13th, 2024, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM. The speakers at this event were the UGM Public Relations Team, consisting of Devi Anviana Putri (graphic designer, video editor, and UGM social media admin), Astri Wulandari (media relations and host of UGM podcast), and Gloria Exoudianta Barus (journalist and live manager of UGM Update). The purpose of this event, attended by representatives from the media units, is to encourage contributors and media admins to be more productive and focused in their production and publication activities. Additionally, the event aims to provide insights into the types and uses of social media according to the content needs.

In opening the event, Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean for Alumni, Cooperation, and Innovation at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, expressed appreciation for the event’s organization. Dr. Fajar also emphasized the urgency of social media management concerning the institution’s image as reflected in social media publications. UGM Public Relations Coordinator, Hestining Kurniastuti, S.S., MBA, stated that this event is a crucial discussion space for sharing experiences in social media management within the UGM environment.

During the discussion session, media representatives from various units shared their challenges in managing social media. “Our media was neglected for 2 years. How can we manage our media effectively?” asked one participant. Another highlighted question during the event was about managing content production systems, coordinating media teams, and formulating good content. The three speakers then guided social media management, such as content mapping and timeline creation. “So, we must prepare materials to be uploaded according to the existing schedule. For example, next month is Ramadan. Now, we should prepare materials to be uploaded during Ramadan,” explained Astri.

This technical guidance has had a positive impact on the media team participants. The expected outcome is to enhance their understanding and mastery of technology and information in reporting within the UGM environment. This reflects the SDGs point 4, which is quality education through information and communication technology skills. Thus, the skills possessed by the media teams in each unit are expected to drive more focused content production, publication, and reporting.

Visit of SD IT BIAS Yogyakarta to the Department of Physics UGM: Introducing Fun Science Phenomena

Science Experiment at The Basic Physics Laboratory of the Departement of Physics UGM

The Basic Physics Laboratory of the Department of Physics UGM welcomed a visit from students of SD IT BIAS Yogyakarta on February 12, 2024. The purpose of this visit was to foster motivation and aspirations among the students in the field of science. Additionally, the students were encouraged to familiarize themselves with science and its phenomena through enjoyable methods in the laboratory.

A total of 100 students from SD IT BIAS Yogyakarta, comprising students from grades 5 and 6, were divided into two large groups. The first group visited the heat chamber and learned about phenomena closely related to physics. Guided by Dr. Chotimah, M.Sc. and Dr. Eko Sulistya, M.Sc., the students were engaged in presentations and demonstrations of physics experiments such as the coefficient of friction between two objects, the conversion of electrical energy into heat energy, and series of incandescent lamps.

The second group visited the mechanics chamber to get a closer look at phenomena with elements of geophysics. With enthusiasm, the students listened to a presentation delivered by Dr.rer.nat. Ade Anggraeni, B.Sc., M.Sc., regarding natural phenomena that frequently occur in Yogyakarta such as earthquakes. The students were introduced to instruments designed to capture seismic waves from seismic sources. Dr. Ade demonstrated the monitoring activities of active volcanoes like Mount Merapi using experimental models. Idham Syah Alam, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., introduced physics experiments, such as resonance tubes and lattice experiments.

In the subsequent session, both groups swapped spaces to ensure they had the same experience of enjoying fun science learning at the Department of Physics UGM. While observing the experimental demonstrations by the lecturers, students were coached to record their outputs in Student Worksheets (LKS) regarding the experiments demonstrated.

The collaborative learning opportunity held at the Basic Physics Laboratory is one form of activity that supports Sustainable Development Goals pillars 4 and 17, concerning quality education and partnerships to achieve goals, as students directly benefit from accessing concrete learning experiences according to their educational stages. In this regard, students can enhance their skills in reading and mathematics. On the other hand, schools have the opportunity to access partnerships to boost students’ motivation for completing their educational journey.

Visit of Prof. Xiao Yongshun from National Tsinghua University to the Department of Physics FMIPA UGM: Prospects for Research and Academic Collaboration

The Department of Physics at FMIPA UGM welcomed a visit from Prof. Xiao Yongshun from the Department of Engineering Physics, National Tsinghua University on Feb 12th, 2024. This visit is part of his series of visits to several institutions in Indonesia such as the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and UGM. During this visit, Prof. Xiao Yongshun was greeted directly by Prof. Gede Bayu Suparta, Prof. Edi Suharyadi (Chair of the Department), and Prof. Kuwat Triyana (Dean of FMIPA UGM). The agenda included discussions on the potential for research and academic collaboration between the two institutions.

The Department of Physics at FMIPA UGM has a unique focus on research addressing local issues, which is part of the Tri Dharma of higher education. Its research focuses on volcanology and the application of radiation technologies such as digital radiography and CT scans. During the visit, Prof. Xiao Yongshun showed great interest in these unique aspects, which became the main points of discussion. The potential use of muons in volcanology research also drew attention, considering the high activity of Mount Merapi which requires constant monitoring. It is hoped that the utilization of muons in monitoring Mount Merapi’s activity can contribute significantly to understanding the characteristics of its activity and disaster risk mitigation.

The research conducted at the Department of Physics UGM has a close correlation with research in the field of radiography applications at Tsinghua University. Prof. Xiao Yongshun, who specializes in X-ray and neutron imaging research, presented on radiography research at Tsinghua University. He is also a member of the Chinese Society of NDT (Non-Destructive Testing). Tsinghua University has had the NUCTECH company since 1997, which operates in the fields of radiation technology applications, image processing, artificial intelligence, and radiation protection.

Tsinghua University views UGM as one of the top universities in Indonesia with unique research capabilities. By involving BRIN in research collaboration, the Department of Physics UGM plans to further develop collaboration with Tsinghua University in the field of muon imaging, as well as in CT-Scan and radiography using X-ray radiation generated with LINAC (Linear Accelerator) technology. This collaboration is expected to positively contribute to advancing science and technology, education, student exchange, and expert cooperation between the two countries.

Radiography research by the Department of Physics UGM to address local issues such as health and natural disasters represents SDGs number 3, which is good health and well-being, number 11, which is sustainable cities and communities, and number 17, which is partnerships. This is evident from medical interventions through CT scans as part of essential healthcare services, disaster management, and established cooperation agreements. Thus, the agenda of the visit and the cooperation undertaken have an impact in line with the needs of the SDGs points.

MAN 1 Surakarta’s Trip to Department of Physics: Enhancing Students’ Scientific Curiosity through Basic Physics Experimentation

MAN 1 Surakarta visited the Department of Physics at FMIPA UGM on Feb 6th, 2024. The event took place in the Basic Physics Laboratory of the Department of Physics building. The visit aimed to foster students’ enthusiasm for science and enhance their grasp of the essential principles of physical measurement in physics. The Department of Physics provided the Basic Physics Laboratory as a venue for students to conduct hands-on experiments

A group of 72 students attended the visit. They were distributed among 12 practical groups, each supervised by capable laboratory assistants aligned with their experiment themes. The students received an introduction to the background of their experiments before being guided through measurements, presentations, data analysis, and the compilation of final reports.

The visit by MAN 1 Surakarta, which engaged its students in practical tasks, showcases the Department of Physics, especially the Basic Physics Laboratory, as a facilitator. This also contributes to advancing SDGs Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Furthermore, this visit enhances the bond between the Department of Physics and schools. Additionally, it provides an avenue for the department to directly enrich secondary school education and community involvement.
