Department of Chemistry FMIPA UGM and Hokkaido University Hold Learning Satellite Program 2026 to Explore Environmental Issues through Chemical Analysis

The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), organized the Learning Satellite Program 2026 as part of its collaboration with Hokkaido University. The six-day program was held in Yogyakarta and brought together participants from the Chemistry Study Program at FMIPA UGM and Hokkaido University. Under the theme “Current Situation and Countermeasures of Environmental Pollution in the Tropical Area,” the program focused on environmental issues in Indonesia through chemical analysis.

The Learning Satellite Program 2026 contains two main activities: field sampling and laboratory analysis. Before participating in these activities, participants attended preparatory lectures delivered by Dr. Tatsufumi Okino, Dr. Yuichi Kamiya, Dr. Shin-Ichiro Noro, Dr. Liu Tong, and Dr. Akira Onoda.

Field sampling took place along the Code River on October 14, 2026. The collected samples were subsequently analyzed on October 15, 2026, at the Analytical Laboratory of the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA UGM. Participants conducted the laboratory analyses in groups under the guidance of Dr. Liu Tong. The program continued with sessions led by Dr. Tatsufumi Okino and Dr. Akira Onoda. Participants also had the opportunity to engage in discussions and present their laboratory analysis results in groups.

The Learning Satellite Program 2026 demonstrated FMIPA UGM’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, Quality Education, through interactive, field-based learning and laboratory analysis. The program also supported SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals, by strengthening international collaboration in education and scientific development.
