FMIPA UGM and PHE Upstream Geophysics Wrap Up the Development of Near-Shore OBS Prototype
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UGM, through its Geophysics Laboratory, has carried out the development phase of the Near-Shore Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) prototype in collaboration with PHE Upstream Geophysics. This joint initiative wound up with a final review meeting and the submission of the project closure report on October 20–21, 2026.
The session aimed to evaluate performance metrics, document research milestones, and further strengthen the synergy between academia and the energy sector. This instrumentation was engineered to deliver advanced marine geophysical surveying capabilities, geared toward supporting exploration and monitoring operations in shallow water environments.
This partnership successfully brought together academic research capacities and real-world technological requirements within the energy industry. Beyond yielding deployable geophysical instrumentation, the joint venture also provided an avenue to build up national research proficiency and innovation.
This milestone aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by fostering research-driven innovation, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by bridging the gap between academia and industry. The engineering of this OBS prototype stands as clear evidence of how collaborative research can address technical demands while reinforcing the national innovation ecosystem.
