CHEMISTRY UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

The prosperity of modern societies is partially based on the significant achievements of Chemistry. Progress in this discipline enables innovations in medicine, agriculture, energy, and in almost all manufacturing sectors of industry and materials for everyday use. With it, chemistry contributes to the improvement of the quality of life of people.

QUICK FACTS

The Chemistry Department, which is nationally leading and internationally recognized in education, research, and community services has the responsibility to prepare qualified graduates having excellent knowledge and skills in Chemistry, a capability to manage international collaboration and competition, as well as motivation to achieve the prosperity of society. The Department of Chemistry was established on September 1, 1960, and it has international standing in a couple of decades ago. The postgraduate programs were inaugurated in 1980. Now, it offers undergraduate, master, and doctoral programs. Currently, the enrollment comprises 630 undergraduate, 140 master, and 50 Ph.D students. The department has granted 2000 B.Sc. (Sarjana Sains), 400 M.Sc., and 100 Ph.D. degrees.

TEACHING AND SUPPORT STAFF

The department has 45 educative staff members, 34 of them are Ph.D. holders. Among the Ph.D. members, 27 have overseas Ph.D. degrees. Of them, 15 are professors and 18 associate professors. There are seven educative staff members taking Ph.D. courses in foreign and domestic universities. It is supported by 38 quality technicians and administration staff.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

For a better quality program, the undergraduate program has been regularly assessed by National Board of Accreditation of Higher Education (BAN-PT) with grade ‘A.’ In October 2009, it was also evaluated by ASEAN University Network QA. Also, both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs were also achieved ‘A’ quality. In addition, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) England has accredited the undergraduate program of chemistry since 2013.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES

The department occupies part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences buildings with the total floor plan of 6000 m2. It has four research and teaching laboratories that are Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry Laboratories and undergraduate teaching laboratory for Basic Chemistry, Laboratory Work and a Computational Chemistry Laboratory of Austrian-Indonesian Centre for Computational Chemistry (AIC). It is also equipped with an array of an international standard of research equipment including AAS, UV-Vis, DTA-TGA, Electrophoresis, Potentiometer, Bomb Calorimeter, GC-MS, HPLC, H-NMR, IR, UV-VIS, TLC Scanner, etc. In January 2010, it acquired a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), a major equipment to support qualified nano-research.

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION

Research is one of the cores of the department advancement. Research is elaborated to support the advancement of science and its application and to assist Universitas Gadjah Mada in pursuing its vision to become an internationally recognized research university. The staff members within the department develop five research groups consisting of Life Sciences, Industrial Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Material Chemistry, and Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. In the last five years, they published 150 papers in international. Some of the faculty members serve as editors and reviewers of international journals, and even as Scientific Adviser of IFS (International Foundation for Sciences), Sweden.

CURRICULUM

The current curriculum offers 114 credit hours of core courses and 79 credit hours of elective courses. A candidate has to complete all 114 credit hours of the core courses and 30 credit hours of elective courses with GPA of at least 2.00 to granted a B.Sc. degree.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Departement of Chemistry has a commitment at research as well as at services for public which is proved with numerous scientific publications, industrial cooperation, and public services such as analysis services, training, courses, etc. Chemistry Department have also owned Plant Oil Center which consist of Coconut Center for managing researches on coconut, and Castor Oil Center for managing researches on castor oil. In community service, Chemistry Department has launched “KKN Tematik” or ‘KKN on Special Topic or Issue’ for community service. The “KKN Tematik” is conducted in collaboration with Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat (LPM) UGM, especially in supporting small enterprises and empowering rural community.

ALUMNAE

Alumnae of Chemistry UGM are widely accepted to work at national institutions such as national universities and governmental department, as well as private/international institutions such as private universities, Pertamina Balongan, Kaltim Prima Coal Co., Sari Husada Inc., etc. Chemistry UGM keeps maintain strong linkage with its alumnae. Among them is the distribution of the questionnaire to obtain alumnae’s feedback on the facts in job-world and job-market as well as assistance to establishing job placement. In order to enhance the participation of graduates in the global market, Department of Chemistry also sends its students for an internship (or praktek kerja lapangan, PKL) in an industry. The student participation in the community is to improve the relationship among academic, job markets and stakeholders.
