Since 2012, Indonesian Journal of Chemistry has been indexed by a major indexing authority called Scopus. Most of the major journals are indexed in Scopus. The journal publishes original research papers, short communications, and review articles. The paper published in this journal implies that the work described has not been, and will not be published elsewhere, except in abstract, as part of a lecture, review or academic thesis. Indonesian Journal of Chemistry appeared first in 1999 with an edition of papers written in Bahasa Indonesia. Now at the age of 17, it only publishes papers in English with abstract prepared in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
In December 2015, the journal has SJR of 0.175 and citation per paper of 0.337. In UGM, it is only among a few journals that gain an international reputation and being indexed in Scopus. The contribution of the Department of Chemistry Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences to advance chemical science makes us proud.
It is of UGM commitment to be reputable in both national and international levels. Among other well-known universities in Indonesia, UGM is of one the top three in the country from time to time. Also, UGM continuously demands each of the programs (undergrad, M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs) to obtain international accreditation.
Currently, each of study programs in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is accredited by Indonesian Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) with Grade A. It means that each study program performs well at the national level. However, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences encourages every department and study program to raise their level of accreditation in both regional and international levels.
Chemistry undergraduate program has pioneered to achieve the international accreditation. Since October 2009, the undergraduate program of chemistry has been accredited by the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Quality Assurance. In addition, this undergraduate program has also been granted an international reputation for achieving accreditation by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), London. The accreditation is valid until March 2018.
Following the footstep of the undergraduate program in chemistry, the undergraduate program in mathematics has also been active in obtaining international recognition. In 2014, the undergraduate program in mathematics had also been assessed by the AUN-QA. In 2015, the undergraduate program in geophysics has submitted its Self Assessment Report to AUN-QA.
The newly appointed departmental and program Chairs were sworn in by Dr. Pekik Nurwantoro, the Dean of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences on January 5, 2016, at 11 am. The day before, the UGM rector Prof. D. Karnawati did the same at the university level. The new functionaries will work hand-in-hand from Jan 2016 through December 2020. This time, there are 15 pairs of new program chairs and four department/secretary pairs. Before, we had only four department/secretary pairs and eight chair/secretary program chairs. It is almost double from the previous. It is expected that in the coming years, more productive work will ensue.
One of the former chairs of the department said that there was no formal education to be a good at administrative work at the faculty level. What we need is to learn and to adapt the new system. As the future of the university will rely on what they do to speed up realizing the academic goal.
On the other hand, one of the newly appointed chairs said that the challenge is for us to improve our performance in the national and international levels.
