Notice to all undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, that the graduation ceremony for September 2023 is scheduled for Monday, September 25, 2023, at 13:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), and the submission of graduation documents from the study program to the faculty should be no later than Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

In addition to submitting the graduation documents, students are also required to register online through the website https://simaster.ugm.ac.id using their respective Single Sign-On (SSO) credentials.

The Community Service Collaboration between FMIPA UGM (Department of Mathematics), FMIPA UNTAD (Department of Mathematics and Statistics), and MGMP Mathematics Palu City is continued with a Discussion on the Implementation of Cooperation between FMIPA UGM and FMIPA UNTAD.

Collaboration between institutions is currently a crucial activity for enhancing the quality of the institutions and the quality of service to the community. In August 2023, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Tadulako University (UNTAD) signed a Cooperation Agreement regarding the activities related to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

On September 6-7, 2023, a delegation from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM, consisting of Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Indah Emilia Wijayanti, Drs. Danardono, MPH, Ph.D., and Dr. Dwi Ertiningsih, visited Tadulako University in Palu. This visit was conducted to discuss plans for collaborative activities that can be carried out during the collaboration period, as well as to engage in joint activities related to Community Service and Academic aspects, including Guest Lectures.

Some of the agreed-upon activities to be implemented include sharing sessions, guest lecturers for certain courses, research collaboration, industrial project collaboration involving students, various academic collaborations, and community service collaborations.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UNTAD have been conducting mentoring activities for Mathematics teachers in Palu City in collaboration with the Mathematics Teacher Forum (MGMP) of Palu High Schools regularly since 2018. In these activities, in addition to sharing materials related to the development of mathematics and the latest mathematics teaching methods, discussions are also held with teacher representatives to address issues related to mathematics teaching and to enhance the teachers’ knowledge.

Apart from activities involving teachers and MGMP, this visit also included academic activities such as Guest Lectures on topics related to the development of Statistics and Data Science, as well as topics related to Student Creativity Week. (FA’23)

Visit of Kyushu University Delegation to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM: Strengthening Collaboration in Education and Research

On Monday, August 28, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA) at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) proudly welcomed guests from Kyushu University. The delegation, consisting of representatives from Kyushu University, visited various locations on the UGM campus, including the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Their presence was aimed at strengthening collaboration in the fields of education and research between the two institutions.

The event commenced with a warm welcome address from Prof. Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si., the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of international collaboration in education and research and elaborated on the vision and mission of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM in the development of science.

The session continued with the screening of a profile video of Kyushu University, introducing the participants to the achievements and commitments of the partner university. Following the video screening, a question and answer session was held to allow representatives from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM to interact directly with the Kyushu University delegation. The exchange of views and questions regarding academic programs, research, and collaboration opportunities was the main focus of this session. Before proceeding to the laboratory visits, a documentation session was held to capture this memorable moment.

After leaving the 2nd-floor meeting room, the Kyushu University delegation was guided by Mr. Danang Teguh Qoyyimi, M.Si., Ph.D., to the Organic Chemistry Laboratory in the Department of Chemistry. In this laboratory, they had the opportunity to witness ongoing experiments and observe students in their daily research activities. This experience provided a deep insight into the practical education provided by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM.

The journey didn’t stop there. Together with Dean Kuwat Triyana, the Kyushu University delegation continued their visit to the Material Physics and Instrumentation Laboratory in the Department of Physics. In this innovative laboratory, they could see students actively engaged in research in various fields of physics while witnessing the advanced instruments created by physics students.

With the laboratory visits at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences concluded, the campus tour continued to the Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory of Gadjah Mada University (LPPT UGM), located adjacent to the Faculty of Pharmacy at UGM. Here, the delegates were introduced to the facilities and testing services provided by LPPT UGM to support research and innovation.

Yogyakarta – In the effort to maintain environmental sustainability and reduce the negative impacts of climate change, innovation continues to be a crucial key. One innovation that has garnered attention is the development of charcoal briquettes based on goat manure. By utilizing organic waste and reducing the use of wood as a charcoal source, this solution has significant potential to become a more environmentally friendly alternative for charcoal production.

As part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, the Physical Chemistry Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at UGM plays a role in environmental preservation through innovative development. In this regard, the laboratory has conducted community service activities with the title “Goat Manure-Based Charcoal Briquettes at CV. Berkat Ilahi Farm, Yogyakarta.” Organic waste, such as goat manure, holds untapped potential. Through the proper processing, goat manure can be transformed into raw material for producing charcoal briquettes. This approach not only addresses environmental pollution issues related to waste management but also helps reduce the pressure on ecosystems caused by deforestation for firewood.

The team led by Mokhammad Fajar Pradipta, M.Eng, has successfully carried out the activity. Together with members of the Physical Chemistry Laboratory team, they conducted a visit on August 27, 2023. Full support from CV. Berkat Ilahi Farm was a key factor in the success of the goat manure-based charcoal briquette production program. This development of a sustainable solution has significant positive impacts, not only on the environment but also on waste management and the livelihoods of farmers.

Yogyakarta, August 28, 2023 – The increasing interest in organic farming has driven organic fertilizers to become a sought-after solution in the modern agricultural world. Apart from being environmentally friendly, organic fertilizers have significant potential in improving soil quality and agricultural yields. Conventional farming methods often rely on chemical fertilizers that can deplete soil fertility over time. This is one of the reasons why organic fertilizers are gaining popularity.

As a demonstration of concern for societal issues, especially in providing organic fertilizers, and to fulfill one of the pillars of Higher Education’s Tri Dharma, which is Community Service, the Community Service Team Based on the Utilization of Research Results and the Application of Appropriate Technology (TTG) from Gadjah Mada University has organized training on the conversion of goat manure into organic fertilizer through fermentation processes at CV. Berkat Ilahi Farm, Yogyakarta.

Mokhammad Fajar Pradipta, M.Eng, who is the responsible person for the TTG community service program, explained to Prof. Ir. Yuny Erwanto, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM, during a meeting on August 25, 2023, that the fermentation process of goat manure typically takes about 2 months using EM4 starter. However, with the technology introduced by the TTG Community Service Team, this time has been successfully shortened to just 5 days. Organic fertilizer not only improves soil structure but also helps maintain moisture and provides essential nutrients without causing long-term negative effects.

In this context, goat manure-based fertilizer is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and it contains beneficial microbes, making it a promising choice. The development of organic fertilizer based on goat manure through the fermentation process provides a sustainable solution for modern agriculture. This fertilizer not only addresses the issue of using chemical fertilizers that have negative impacts on the environment and soil quality but also naturally enhances agricultural productivity. With proper implementation, fermentation-based organic fertilizer can be a crucial step towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

The Importance of Adaptability in Facing the Disruptive Era

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) held a graduation ceremony for bachelor’s degree recipients on August 23, 2023. More than 200 proud graduates successfully completed their academic journeys. This historic moment marked the pinnacle of their achievements, with several outstanding accomplishments among the graduating class.

This event was not just a celebration but also a valuable platform for the 138 graduates who received the cum laude distinction for their exceptional academic performance. Their success as high-achieving students not only inspires their fellow students but also vividly illustrates that dedication and focus in the learning process can lead to undeniable excellence.

The Importance of Adaptability in Facing the Disruptive Era

 

In the context of preparing for the challenging disruptive era, the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Prof. Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si., provided valuable insights. He emphasized that this era requires a strong skillset preparation. “We are aware that the world is changing rapidly. Therefore, FMIPA is not only focused on mastering the subject matter but also on developing relevant skills,” he explained.

One of the concrete efforts by FMIPA to support students is the establishment of global certification programs in hard skills, soft skills, and entrepreneurship. “We want our students to be prepared to face global challenges and compete on the international stage. These certification programs will provide them with a strong foundation,” he added.

Moreover, FMIPA is also striving to prepare students for future job opportunities. In the next two years, there is an anticipation of job opportunities in the promising sectors of carbon credit and data privacy officer (DPO). “We want our students to have good marketing skills and the ability to capitalize on these opportunities. Additionally, it’s important to choose the right place and maintain connections,” he expressed.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Kuwat expressed high hopes for mutual development between students, faculty, and all elements of the campus. “With a spirit of collaboration and strong teamwork, we can realize a bright future for FMIPA and our nation,” he concluded.
